CHAPTER 11

When we arrived back at the safehouse, Hunt and Hawk were already there. But the surprising part was that Goodall was there too. She explained to me what had happened and then told me that Holly was under arrest.

“I want to see her.”

“No, I don’t think that is a good idea. Once the weather lifts, she will be sent back to London for interrogation.”

“Interrogation? You make it sound like there is more to it.”

“We need to investigate the leaks,” Goodall informed me.

“You’re wasting your time. It’s not her.”

“The higher-ups can decide that. Get your cuts patched. Then you can debrief with me on what you discovered.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

While I was seeing to my injuries, Slick came looking for me. “Boy am I glad you’re back. There is shit going down here you’ll never believe.”

He explained their mission and the chips. He then told me about the impostors and how Goodall and her people had turned up and saved the day, or rather Holly did by shooting the shit out of the Russians. But then he informed me of the coincidence of Goodall already being in Berlin.

“Okay, so?”

He looked at me, waiting for me to join the dots. “The Russians were getting their orders from someone named Melinoe. It means ghost. There was a number in the commander’s cell. I rang it and it pinged in Berlin. It came a while ago for one minute and then went off. It pinged from in this safehouse.”

“Shit. You’re telling me Goodall is an impostor too?”

“I can’t be sure. But it fits.”

“Tell me what happened with the woman who died,” I said to Slick.

“Holly gave her a little extra pain medication to relax her for questioning. Not the first time it’s been done. I’ve seen Brick do it before.”

I nodded. We’d used the same interrogation technique on wounded prisoners in the past. “Keep going.”

“Anyway, they got some intel but then Goodall called time on the interrogation.”

“Why?”

“Well, looking back, maybe they were getting too much, and Goodall was worried that things might come out.”

“Okay. Did anything pop on the missiles or motors?”

“Still working on it,” he replied.

“Fine, make it quick. Where is the body?”

“Down in the basement.”

I looked at my watch. It was two p.m. The woman and child had nine hours to live.

Leaving Slick to his search, I went and found the others. Staring at Hunt, I said, “You still up to date with your medical training?”

“Sure.”

“Come with me.”

We headed downstairs into the basement of the safe house, finding a single body bag. The others had been disposed of, but this one would go back to the UK for examination in the case against Holly.

“What are we doing, Reaper?”

“Looking for anything that’s not right.”

“Such as?”

I gave him the short version of what Slick had told me. Hunt frowned and said, “You think that someone else might have gotten to her?”

“Yes.”

“Then let’s check her out.”

For ten minutes we looked over the dead body. The cold in the basement acted like a cooler and slowed down natural processes.
